What is Melasma

What is Melasma

Facial hyperpigmentation occurs due to overproduction of melanin, caused by sun exposure, high temperatures, genetics, and hormones.  When dealing with hormonal pigmentation, we are most likely dealing with a condition often referred to as Melasma, or Chloasma.  This is considered to be dermal level pigmentation, which, if caught at an early stage, may be controlled, however, it may never become permanently reduced.

If you are concerned with your skin condition, here are some main differences between the two conditions, so you can get a better idea of what you may be dealing with:

Hyperpigmentation

  • Often referred to as “age” or “liver” spots
  • Starts off resembling freckles, and eventually turns darker as the pigmentation becomes more dermal
  • Main component of initiation is sun exposure, and in rare cases, problems with the liver
  • Possesses an asymmetrical appearance
  • Darkens with poor lifestyle choices such as smoking, unhealthy diet, and lack of exercise
  • Easier to reduce the appearance of pigmentation than Melasma/Chloasma, however, treatments for pigment reduction are not permanent, and require maintenance

Melasma/Chloasma

  • Signs of Melasma often start as mild browning of the skin on the forehead or upper lip
  • Eventually, pigmentation spreads to the cheeks
  • Has a symmetrical appearance
  • Often referred to as “pregnancy mask”
  • Main component of initiation includes pregnancy, hormone-altering birth control methods, genetics, thyroid imbalance, and some prescription drugs
  • Is often related to an increased level of estrogen
  • Often occurs in Asian skin types
  • Becomes more noticeable with sun exposure
  • The appearance may never be permanently reduced, but controlling it is possible
  • Although the majority of people suffering from Melasma are women, 10% of Melasma sufferers are men

During your initial visit for Melasma Toronto a masque will be applied by a medical aesthetician, followed by a 14 days’ post treatment visit, for a spot masque application. The treatment involves no discomfort throughout the full process.  The skin becomes swollen and red for the first 2 days after treatment, and eventually peels by the 3-4th day.  Within a short time, your new healthy complexion will be visible.

Remember, when treating facial pigmentation, the sooner it is dealt with, the better results will appear.  Procrastination is the enemy, and prevention is key.
