Dreaming of silky smooth skin without the hassle of shaving and the pain of waxing?
Laser hair removal is a fantastic near-permanent solution that can effectively reduce unwanted hair!
If you’re one of the many Canadians who are curious about this beauty treatment, you’re probably wondering how many sessions are needed for hair-free skin.
Well, there’s no single answer. On average, our clients at Canada MedLaser notice significant hair reduction after around 8-10 sessions.
However, you might need fewer or more, as the overall treatment timeline depends on several factors.
Keep reading—we’ll explain everything below.
Why Do You Need Multiple Sessions, Anyway?
For laser hair removal to be effective, multiple sessions are needed. But why?
The explanation has something to do with how lasers work and the natural hair growth cycle.
Laser hair removal works by targeting the melanin in the hair follicle. That’s why it’s most effective on hairs that are actively growing.
At any given time, not all of our hair follicles are in the active stage. The rest are in a dormant phase.
Spacing out the sessions allows the laser to work on newly active follicles. This leads to long-lasting results that no at-home hair removal devices can match.
How Many Sessions Are Needed?
For a silky, hair-free result, you might need 8-10 sessions, spaced out every 4-6 weeks. That’s just an estimate, though!
You might need additional sessions if your hair is very fine or light, or if you have a condition that affects your hormones (like PCOS).
Laser Hair Removal Treatment Timeline
Before starting the treatment, it’s best to consult with an expert so they can evaluate your skin, hair, and goals. They’ll also explain what to expect during the procedure.
Your aesthetician will also discuss the costs involved in the laser hair removal treatment.
Avoid waxing, plucking, and tanning in the 2-4 weeks leading to the treatment. Then, shave the area about 24 hours prior to your appointment.
In the first session, you might feel a mild snapping sensation. That’s the laser working on your hair follicles.
Right after the treatment, you might see some redness or swelling. But don’t worry, that usually subsides within a day or two.
For the next 2-3 weeks after the session, the treated hair will shed or fall out. You might also see stubble on the area, but it’s a natural part of the process.
Depending on your goals, your aesthetician might schedule ongoing treatments every 4-6 weeks.
As hair growth is reduced, the time between treatments may increase. And if you ever miss a session, try not to worry—you can still carry on with the treatment!
Most clients see the full results after 6-9 months, and touch-ups may be needed every several months, or even once a year.
